Autumn 2007
Dear Friends,
Welcome to my website! I’m delighted that you are taking a moment to drop by, and I hope while you’re here you will take a moment to check out my list of books. There are tantalizing excerpts to read and fun photos of my travels, and a special section of essays on the heroes my darling husband has managed to inspire for me. I do hope you’ll take a moment to wander through.
Forgive me for not including an email address at this time—after the birth of my third child I found I couldn’t get to the computer for quite some time, and when I did I felt so terrible for all the lovely readers who had sent me messages and I had not been able to give them a timely response. After months of struggling to answer all the emails that kept piling up, I finally realized that at this stage of my life, finding the hours needed at the computer just to reply to emails was not possible. I do look forward to having that kind of time again!
Life continues to be a blur with three small children, but now that my baby has turned two, I find that I have to move even faster just to keep up! She has gone from clinging to me to racing in the opposite direction—toward the stairs, toward the street, toward the toilet with some toy that she is convinced needs a wee bath—and I chase after her, shouting “Adelaide-no!” so much I’m sure she thinks ‘no’ is actually part of her name. It is an extremely busy, sweet time, full of craziness and noise and moments of pure exhaustion (mine, not hers!)
I wish all of you a busy, sweet fall, with a little craziness, and a few moments of quiet to curl up with a great book.
Warmly,
Autumn 2006
Dear Friends,
I am thrilled that Every Whispered Word has taken first place in both the Aspen Gold and Daphne du Maurier contests! This was wonderful news to me, especially given that this past year has flown by in such a crazy haze, I had pretty much forgotten about the few contests I had managed to actually fill out the paperwork to enter.
My darling baby Adelaide is now over a year old, and she is a delightfully happy, entertaining little miss! She is absolutely huge, just like her older brother and sister were at this age. This means she has been slow to crawl and is not yet walking, which is fine with me, because I can still move almost as fast as she can scoot along the floor! Having three small children is keeping me enormously busy, which is why there haven’t been any updates from me in a long while. I haven’t actually fallen off the earth, I’ve just fallen into the land of full-time mommy, which is wonderful, and something I very much wanted to do at this stage of my children’s lives. However, it has meant that I’ve had to take a temporary break from my writing. I’m sure I make an amusing sight these days, always rushing and out of breath, lugging a heavy one-year-old on one hip with my hair mussed and my shirt stained with strained prunes, trying to get my other two children to school, to skating, to swimming, to piano...making my husband crazy because at 11:00 at night I am obsessed with folding endless mountains of laundry!
I wish all of you a very happy autumn, filled with lots of busy, crazy, funny moments, and a few moments of quiet where you can curl up with a good book!
Warmly,

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL!!!!
Adelaide Victoria
Born September 2, 2005
7 pounds 3 ounces
19 ¾ inches long
Dear Friends,
I am thrilled to let you know that on September 2nd I had a beautiful baby girl, Adelaide Victoria. She is our third baby, and her father, big sister Genevieve and big brother Carson are totally enchanted by her. Life at the moment is an endless blur of feedings and diaper
changes and hours spent holding her in the rocking chair, a happy blur—but still a tiring one! I have taken to watching cooking shows in the wee hours of the morning as I feed Adelaide—somehow I find sleepily watching chefs whip up incredible gourmet dishes that I’ll never make rather soothing. (The next day I can’t even remember what they made…)
I wish all of you a very happy autumn, filled with wonderful moments, big and small….
Warmly,
August 2005
Dear Friends,
As I write this I am in the last days of my pregnancy with my third child, and have blossomed into a size that makes getting out of a chair equivalent to an Olympic feat--although definitely not as graceful!
The summer has passed in a hot, steamy haze of trying to get ready for the arrival of this new little person. My two children, Genevieve and Carson, are thrilled at the prospect of having a baby join the family. However, Genevieve, who is 7, has made it clear she wants a girl, while Carson, who is 4, really wants a boy. Since the ultrasounds have shown there is only one baby in there--even though I feel like I’m carrying triplets--I’m afraid I can only accommodate one of them. My husband and I decided not to find out the sex of the baby in advance—for me part of the fun is in guessing what the baby will be, and imagining a sweet little boy or girl, and endlessly debating the merits of this name or that name…
Of course, not knowing the baby’s sex meant the nursery had to be neutral in its décor. I do confess I had a moment in a store when I saw some beautiful little princess decorations, and some handsome boyish decorations of sail boats and cars, where I did waver and thought it would be easier to know. But ultimately my longing to be surprised by the baby won, and the nursery was done in yellow with cheerful baby jungle animals romping around the border. The baby will sleep in the same antique white wicker bassinet that both my other children spent their first few months in, then graduate to the same white crib with the Cow Jumped Over the Moon bedding that the other two loved for so many years. The bedding is a bit faded and worn, but there is a lovely sense of continuity that makes it even more special.
So my writing will be put on hold for a few months while I devote myself to this new little person in my life. I know I’ll be bleary with sleep deprivation in the months to come, but as soon as I can steal a moment to get back to my computer I’ll write and let you know whether I had a boy or a girl!

Dear Friends,
Every Whispered Word has received wonderful reviews, My Favorite Thief is nominated for a RITA Award, but what really matters in our house is that we finally had a visit from the Tooth Fairy!
I must confess, I had all but forgotten the incredible excitement that revolves around the Tooth Fairy’s visits. My daughter Genevieve just turned 7--for those of you who have been wondering about my birthday cake dilemma last month, you will be happy to know I managed to once again avoid that terrifying Barbie-in-the-ballgown-cake I fear so much. Instead, Genevieve chose a Disney Princess Cake, a super-sugary confection with the Disney Princesses smiling cheerfully at a sea of sickly pink and white roses, which I managed to ruthlessly hack into a mess of sloppy looking chocolate chunks without any trouble whatsoever.

“ TOP PICK! EXCITING, EMOTIONAL, HUMOROUS, simply brimming with characters you can never forget and a story that will stir your adventurous spirit, Monk’s novel is a triumph. But it’s not just the fast pace that will keep you turning the pages, it’s also the desire to read more about the wonderful characters and marvelous love story. Read and savor!” ---Romantic Times BOOKclub |
But back to the Tooth Fairy.
Much to her dismay, Genevieve was the only person in her entire Grade One class who had not yet lost a tooth. I didn’t see this as a problem, because just like talking, walking, and using the potty, I have learned that eventually these milestones are reached regardless of whether I fret endlessly over them or not. But for Genevieve, having a perfectly lovely, straight, full set of teeth was not only embarrassing, but also something of a cheat. Because, of course, the Tooth Fairy brings money. Or gifts. Or both. Therefore it was decidedly unfair that there were girls in her class who had already had as many as 8 visits from the Tooth Fairy, while poor Genevieve had not had even one.
So when one of her teeth began to loosen a few weeks ago, she wriggled and poked and prodded it until the poor tooth had no choice but to fall out, right in the middle of her math lesson. Of course losing a tooth in school is cause for great excitement, no doubt because blood is involved. Genevieve was instantly a celebrity as she left the class to rinse her mouth and head up to the principal’s office, where she was given a little envelope in which to place her precious tooth. That night she informed me that having waited so long to actually lose a tooth, she didn’t really want to give it up to wherever it is that the Tooth Fairy takes all children’s lost teeth. So we wrote a letter, asking the Tooth Fairy if we might keep the tooth, and the Tooth Fairy very kindly obliged by leaving it under Genevieve’s pillow, along with some money and a small gift. Genevieve was completely thrilled, and is now hard at work loosening a second tooth…
As for Every Whispered Word, I am elated Romantic Times Magazine made it a Top Pick, and called it “a triumph.” Set against the deadly intrigues of Victorian England and South Africa, it is the non-stop adventure of archaeologist Lady Camelia Marshall, whose life changes when she barges into the laboratory of the brilliant but hopelessly distracted inventor Simon Kent, with an extraordinary business proposition. If you would like to read an excerpt, click here. And be sure to check out my contest—this month I’ll be giving away an autographed copy of Every Whispered Word!
I recently did an interview with Historical Romance Club—if you are interested in finding out what inspires me or which of my heroes I find particularly sexy, go to http://www.bcsupernet.com/users/wodan/ing/Monk01.html.
As always, my deepest thanks to all of you for being so wonderfully supportive of my writing. Special thanks to all the fun-loving readers and booksellers who took a moment to chat with me recently at the Romantic Times Convention in St. Louis—I was delighted to speak with you and hope to see you at the convention next year. Be sure to check out my Photo Album for the latest pictures of me having fun in St. Louis!
Warmest wishes,
